What is the average cost for the design and implementation of a wordpress theme?

omerta asked:

I’m interested in a one-of-a-kind custom theme.
Hi All. I’m looking for the AVERAGE COST for the development of a custom theme, not resources for ready-made themes or a contractor to develop one for me.

I’ve been creating WordPress themes for my clients for over 3 years. Depending on your requirements we can implement a new theme in 1-3 weeks.

Feel free to contact me to discuss.

I don’t think its possible for anyone to say what the average cost is for the development of a custom theme for WordPress since there has never been a survey to find out what designers charge.

I’ve seen designers offer to develop custom themes for as low as US$30 and as high as $1500. A lot depends on whether the designer is a professional (ie. does themes as a business and perhaps the sole means of earning an income) or a hobbyist who just does this work for a bit of extra income. It also depends on where the designer is from – theme designers in countries where a US dollar is worth a lot of money tend to charge very little. Price does not usually reflect quality either and some of the more expensive themes can be just as badly coded as some cheaper themes. A lot of extra functionality can also be added through the theme too, which makes it really hard to compare prices – one would expect that a theme incorporating a shopping cart, for example, would cost more than a basic custom theme that doesn’t do much more than change the CSS on the default Kubric theme!

This really is an unknown and would be a good topic for a survey (if everyone answered honestly).
