Will updating Wordpress destroy my theme?

hockmasm asked:

Wordpress has an Update button on my blog. I have seriously recoded the blog to match my site. It’s barely noticeable as wordpress default theme now. If i update it under the admin section will it ruin all of my existing code?

It’s very possible it will. Make a backup of your wordpress folder and database. Then try to update it. If the theme breaks, you can always put the old version back.

Alternatively, you could create another wp install with the same database (different db name tho) upgrade that then work on tweaking your theme to work with the upgrade so noone sees it.

I haven’t had any issues with a WordPress update breaking my theme mods since about 2.6; the current version is 2.8.4.

If you use the “Automatically Upgrade” routine, which has been present only since 2.7.1 or so, core files are updated, but theme files are left alone. The possibility exists that some custom function may not work after the core update, but I haven’t seen it happen yet, and I’ve got four blogs to update.
